Tips for Volunteer Signature Collectors

  • Best practice tips to share with volunteers:
    • Have them pre-fill the county in their petition packet (helps ensure people don’t sign a book for the wrong county)
    • Before handing the petition to someone, have the following conversation: ■ Confirm that they are registered to vote
      • Don’t make any stray marks in the booklet
      • Write as legibly as possible
      • Remind them of today’s date
      • Ok to leave the “ward/precinct” section blank
      • Signature should match your driver’s license (bc that’s likely the signature in the voter file)
  • Only complete and sign the “Statement of Circulator” form after you are done gathering signatures for that petition book
    • The date on the form must be the same day or later than the date of the last signature you collect.
  • When volunteers return their petition books, they will need to fill that form out completely, leaving the employment location blank.
  • Be sure to enter the number of signatures they have collected (it’s easy to miss on the form). Count only the completed signatures they collected. Count twice, because this must be correct.
