We made history in the 2023 election. Ohio women resoundingly told extremist politicians that they don’t get to control our families, our bodies, or our reproductive healthcare decisions.

The women of Red Wine & Blue were on the frontlines from day one; first collecting signatures to get Issue 1 on the ballot, next defeating a Republican-led special election measure trying to make it harder to pass Issue 1, then ultimately getting Issue 1 passed, enshrining our reproductive rights in Ohio’s constitution.

Using the power of our relationships, Red Wine & Blue’s community of women in Ohio engaged voters across party lines. We hosted 968 events. We helped 300,000 voters find friendly, factual information on our website instead of dangerous disinformation. Issue 1 won in 18 counties that voted for Trump, and 16 of those were RWB suburbs. This successful movement is now inspiring other states to protect reproductive rights, and we’re so proud to be a part of it.

Issue 1 Passed: What Now?

While we celebrate the passing of Issue 1, we recognize that our work isn’t done. The extremists who want to take away our reproductive rights are making a lot of noise about what comes next. What we know for sure is that there are important races in the 2024 elections that could jeopardize the rights we secured with the passage of Issue 1.

For example, there are more than 30 laws on the books in Ohio that may be unconstitutional now. We must elect state Supreme Court justices who will uphold Issue 1’s protections against any new challenges that arise as those laws are repealed or litigated. We also need to re-elect Senator Sherrod Brown to help prevent any federal attempts at a national abortion ban.

The effort to end gerrymandering in our state is also critical in this fight so we can prevent extremists with anti-women and anti-abortion agendas from maintaining a supermajority in Columbus.

Watch SCOTUS For The Future of Medication Abortion

Mifepristone, one of two medications used in abortion and miscarriage care, is at risk of being banned nationwide, even in Ohio, despite the protections provided by Issue 1.

The U.S. Supreme Court is hearing a case challenging the drug’s FDA approval in late March and is expected to rule by the summer of 2024. The same court that overturned Roe v. Wade could now strip our access to this well-established medication that has proven to be safer than Tylenol. It’s moving quickly, so keep up with the latest at The More You Roe.

Save IVF and Birth Control

For a long time, extremists have used the belief that life begins at conception in their efforts to end abortion. They are now using the same argument to come after our rights to birth control and IVF, as we saw with the recent Alabama Supreme Court decision. Let’s be clear, all our reproductive decisions are at risk when extremists are in power, whether in our courts, state legislatures, or at the federal level. That’s why we’ve launched our Save IVF and Birth Control campaign. Check it out, stay informed, talk to your friends, share information on Rally (need correct link), and be ready to vote for common sense candidates who support our bodily autonomy and reproductive rights in November!
