Here are our top issues in 2024.
Suburban women have a lot of really important issues weighing on our minds. Here are the top issues we’re focusing on in 2024. If an issue you are concerned about isn’t included on this list, let us know. Chances are, it concerns us, too. We can provide you with additional information and connect you with partner organizations that can help.
EXTREMISM
Extremists across the country are attacking our freedoms. We’re seeing it everywhere – in our local communities, in our social media feeds, and more and more, we’re seeing it in politicians running for office in every level of our government. Who can forget the terror we felt during the January 6th insurrection, or the unhinged yelling at one of our local school board meetings? It’s hard to make sense of it. And sometimes, it seems so chaotic, it’s difficult to know how to even respond to it. That’s where we can help.
Every week, we’re creating videos and explainers to help break it down and make sense of it. Most importantly, we share actions you can take to stand up to extremism wherever it rears its ugly head. Check out our Cost of Extremism podcast, our explainer on the right-wing plan for our country, and our guide to extremist groups like Moms for Liberty.
REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM
If you’re like most American women, you thought that the battle for control over our bodies was fought and won back in the 1970s with the landmark Supreme Court case, Roe vs. Wade – which is why so many of us were stunned when that decision was reversed in 2022.
Since then, states have passed extremely restrictive abortion laws or banned it altogether. And they aren’t stopping there. Now they are coming after our access to birth control and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Trump even said that if elected, he will implement a national abortion ban. And conservative extremists are already waiting in the wings with Project 2025, their radical plan for our country that includes, among other things, huge attacks on our reproductive rights. It’s up to us to stop this from happening.
PUBLIC EDUCATION
Extremist politicians and outside groups are attacking out kids’ education. In fact, they’ve become SO extreme that they’ve resorted to book banning, harassing teachers and librarians, and even bullying students.
Well, suburban women aren’t having it. We want ALL children to have access to an accurate, honest education that will prepare them for the future. We need strong, well-funded public schools so our kids grow up well-rounded and informed, with strong critical thinking skills. This is jeopardized by funding cuts and school voucher programs which take money away from public schools and redistribute them to private ones. And conservative extremists have been very candid about their plans to eliminate the Department of Education altogether. We need to protect our public schools.
LGBTQ+ RIGHTS
Threats to LGBTQ+ kids keep coming. Whether it’s banning books and pride flags or attacking transgender kids, the extreme right is weaponizing our kids for political gain.
Radical groups are trying to convince people they’re concerned about “Parents Rights” (spoiler alert – they’re not). What it’s really about is a very small, very loud group of people trying to impose their beliefs on everyone else. And it doesn’t stop there. Project 2025 is the far-right extremists’ vision for America. It includes things like removing federal protections for all LGBTQ+ people, establishing a “biblically based” definition of marriage and family, and demonizing – and potentially criminalizing – transgender people.
Everyone has the right to be safe, to live and love, and thrive. Together, let’s fight for a future that helps us all become the best, most authentic version of ourselves.
THE ECONOMY
The economy is top of mind for women in every suburb in America. Moms are trying their best to do it all and we’re tired of issues being framed as an ‘either/or.’ We simultaneously care about all of the issues affecting our families – the economy, our reproductive freedom, our schools – and we know all these issues are connected.
What we need are facts. During the pandemic, moms were heavily impacted by school closures, work from home environments, and mounting expectations that we would pick up the slack on child care and education. Despite the return to school, the extra burdens placed on us haven’t eased up. And we’re struggling under the weight of it all.
From price gouging to tax cuts for the wealthy to extremists holding our economy hostage, we need to name how we got here and how we can use our voices for change.
