Helen’s Story

It was the summer I turned 20. I was on a scholarship to college and about to start my junior year. I started feeling queasy all the time and noticed my breasts getting swollen and tender so I went to the doctor and yup, pregnant.

I was in no way, shape or form ready to be a mother. This was in the mid-70s so I would have had to drop out of college and lose my scholarship. A dear friend lived on Long Island and took me to the Bill Baird Clinic. Everyone there was so kind. I was 11 weeks along, just within the limit to have a simple D&C. It was over quickly, with no complications. And it was the right choice for me! I was able to graduate college, go to an Ivy League school for my master’s degree and go on to have a successful career. My (ex) husband and I never had children which saddens me, but I have NO REGRETS about the choice I made at 19.

Every woman should be able to make the choice that is right for her!
